Clarendon-Courthouse Neighborhood

Clarendon, located in Arlington County, Virginia is often considered the most cool and laid-back of Arlington’s urban villages. Characterized by tee shirts, baseball caps and Volvos, Clarendon’s main thoroughfares are Wilson Boulevard and Clarendon Boulevard. Because of the local street network configuration, the precise boundaries of Clarendon are not defined; but as Clarendon has become popular as a destination its informal boundaries have expanded toward Virginia Square and Courthouse, two adjacent Metro station areas.

Clarendon-Courthouse is home to mid-sized office buildings and safe, stable neighborhoods with single-family homes and tree-lined streets. Newly-built homes offer additional opportunities to prospective residents.

The neighborhood is also a hip place to hang out after work, and a nightlife destination offering moderately-priced meals and several bars. Visitors come from throughout the DC metro area to sample the ethnic cuisine here, from Chinese to El Salvadoran to Japanese, Greek, Moroccan and Vietnamese — all within walking distance of the Metro station. It’s a live, work, and play urban village, with no car required.

Shopping is convenient at the Market Common Clarendon, which offers Barnes & Noble, Crate & Barrel, Apple, The Container Store and Pottery Barn. The area is also known for its local, homegrown retail shops that make Clarendon-Courthouse varied and unique, and contribute to the strong sense of community here.

The Clarendon Alliance, a partnership of residents and business owners, addresses local issues and promotes events including a weekly farmers market, an annual Mardi Gras celebration, Tax Blues Night and the largest celebration, the Clarendon Day festival. Held in mid-October, the event features four live-music stages, local restaurant and coffee house booths, clothing, jewelry, antiques and collectibles, children’s games and rides and an ice-cream eating contest.

Clarendon is host to one of the largest one-day professional and amateur bicycle races in the US, the CSC Invitational, each spring. A farmer’s market at Clarendon’s Central Park is held Wednesday afternoons from Memorial Day until Labor Day and features organic produce, baked goods, plants, herbs and homemade soaps.
