Westover Village Neighborhood
The neighborhood of Westover in Arlington, Virginia is centered around Washington Boulevard between North McKinley Road and North Longfellow Street. One of Arlington’s “urban villages,” Westover is a very pedestrian-friendly neighborhood where residents can walk to shops, to work or to the Washington DC Metro Ballston or East Falls Church stations. Accessibility and funky character help make Westover an appealing place to live, work, shop and hang out.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Westover Historic District consists of 418 homes on just over 143 acres. The neighborhood was constructed in five phases between 1939 and 1957, and today, its overall character remains predominantly the same. Westover is bounded by 18th Street North and North Longfellow Street on the north, North Jefferson Street on the east, Interstate 66 on the south and McKinley Road on the west.
The residential streets are lined with modest, pre-World War II Colonial Revival-style single-family homes, duplexes and multi-family garden apartments. Homes have ample lawns and many offer paved driveways. Rolling terrain, wooded areas, winding streets and cul-de-sacs enhance Westover’s quiet, small-town feel, and create a pleasant route for strolling or biking, while just within range of the commercial district.
The commercial district is centered along North Washington Boulevard and Patrick Henry Drive and hosts the original shopping center – which still serves the community – the Claude A. Swanson Junior High School and the Westover Baptist Church. A park known as Westover Park is located in the southern part of the neighborhood.
Appetites are appeased at the Lost Dog Café and Stray Cat Café, casual restaurants that cater to both families and young professionals. The cafes are affiliated with the Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation, established in 2001, which places an average of 1500 animals annually into permanent homes.
The Lebanese Taverna is a family-style restaurant serving Middle Eastern cuisine. Arax Café is another Middle Eastern café, perfect for coffee and falafel.
Swanson Middle School, built in 1939 at the intersection Patrick Henry Drive and Washington Boulevard, was the state’s first junior high school and is the oldest continuously-operating junior high in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
