Yorktown Neighborhood
The Yorktown neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia is located north of Lee Highway near the intersection of George Mason Boulevard and Harrison Street. This vibrant residential neighborhood hosts over 1000 homes, one of the area’s top public high schools, convenient shopping and wonderful parks.
Yorktown High School has won national awards and consistently ranks among the top 10 high schools in the Washington, DC area. The neighborhood is also home to a large chapter of the Knights of Columbus, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and the Cornerstone Wesleyan Church.
Residents here enjoy fine shopping and dining opportunities close by — they are, in fact, within walking distance for most residents. Grocery shopping venues in the neighborhood include Harris-Teeter and Safeway.
There are three parks in Yorktown: Greenbrier, Chestnut Hills and Rock Spring. Greenbrier Park sits adjacent to Yorktown High School and hosts the school’s athletic fields, a number of youth sports leagues and an indoor public swimming pool.
Chestnut Hills Park, located on North Harrison Street, offers a playground and is ideal for small children. Rock Spring Park, located at the north end of George Mason Boulevard, boasts walking trails and beautiful gardens maintained by the Rock Spring Garden Club.
The Yorktown Civic Association traces its history of involvement in the community and advocacy for neighborhood issues back to 1945. The association was active in the efforts to develop Rock Spring Park and to prevent George Mason Drive from being extended through the park and becoming a major thoroughfare.
Although activity declined in the 1970s and 1980s, the 1990s brought a renewal of interest. Under Arlington County’s innovative Neighborhood Conservation program enabling neighborhoods to plan and implement local improvements, Yorktown installed new curbs and gutters for North Jefferson Street, traffic circles and islands, street lighting, and neighborhood signs. The Yorktown neighborhood has been the beneficiary of more than $1 million in Neighborhood Conservation funded improvements – only one of two Arlington Civic Associations to exceed the million-dollar mark.
