Blacksburg at a Glance
The McBryde neighborhood in Blacksburg is just north of the Virginia Tech campus. The southern part of the neighborhood holds single-family homes on tree-shaded streets, while the northern part of the community, near Interstate 460, has mostly apartment and condominium complexes a short walk from campus. The University Mall shopping center occupies the southwest edge of the neighborhood.
McBryde is bounded on the south by Prices Ferry Road, also called State Route 685. On the east, the main boundary is Toms Creek Road. A small area east of Toms Creek bounded by Watson Avenue, Stonegate Drive, and Broce Drive is also included in the neighborhood. On the north, the boundary is I-460, and on the west, Old Glade Road and Glade Road are the boundaries. The ZIP code for McBryde is 24060.
The single-family houses in the McBryde community are mostly ranch-style, primarily of wood frame or brick construction. The neighborhood also holds some split-level and traditional homes. Most houses were built in the 1960s, when the neighborhood experienced rapid growth. They are set on large lots with mature trees. Many have informal landscaping.
The apartment complexes of the neighborhood serve the large student population of Blacksburg. Multi-unit housing is found on several streets near the I-460, on Toms Creek Road, and on Appalachian Road. Apartment communities are generally large and well managed and offer many amenities.
Opportunities for recreation are plentiful in and near Blacksburg. In town, the Steppin’Out Street Fair closes several city streets each August. This is a fair dedicated to crafts, food, and music. Just north of town in Jefferson National Forest, the Cascades is a magnificent waterfall, just one of the sights along the many wilderness trails.
