Fairfax County, Virginia

Shhh … can you keep a secret? We know the location of the CIA!

Okay, it’s not really a secret. The CIA’s headquarters are publicly located in Fairfax County, Virginia – as are the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, the National Reconnaissance Office and the National Counterterrorism Center. We’re guessing they sell a large number of black trench coats in Fairfax County.

Sales of Blackberries® (and not the fruity kind) must be brisk as well, because this county is also home to half of the area’s Fortune 500 companies. Headquartered here are Volkswagen Group of America, Hilton Worldwide, Northrop Grumman, Gannett, Capital One, General Dynamics, Freddie Mac, Sallie Mae and ExxonMobil. Fairfax County’s total office space inventory totals 105,200,000 square feet, approximately the size of Lower Manhattan.

Fairfax was the first county in the United States to reach a six-figure median household income, and has the second-highest median household income in the United States after neighboring Loudoun County.

As one might expect this close to DC, Fairfax County is rich in cultural heritage. Two sites have particular historical significance to Fairfax County: Colvin Run Mill and Sully.

Nestled between Tysons Corner and Reston, Colvin Run Mill is an early 19th-century operating gristmill, an award-winning restoration and a Virginia landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It offers tours, educational programs, special events, and outdoor concerts.

Sully Historic Site is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1794 by Richard Bland Lee, Northern Virginia’s first representative to congress, the house is furnished with antiques of the federal period.

Annual festivals include the “Celebrate Fairfax!” festival held in June at the Fairfax County Government Center in Fairfax City.
