Cherrydale Neighborhood
Despite the fact that it is only three and one-half miles from the Washington Monument in Arlington, Virginia, the small, neatly kept, older single-family homes and quiet streets of Cherrydale exude a small-town feeling of days gone by. Coincidentally, in March 2003 the entire Cherrydale neighborhood was placed on the National Register of Historic Places; residents here appreciate the neighborhood’s heritage, and are working to rehabilitate and preserve these fine old homes.
The first known settler in Cherrydale was Andrew Donaldson, who began farming here in the 1780s. He was followed by more farmers who acquired and cleared the wilderness for cultivation. During the Civil War, Union troops camped here and built several major roads, including Military Road. Many of them stayed behind to farm here at the end of the war.
Farmers here had easy access to the Washington and Georgetown markets; the area was ideally suited for fruit orchards and truck farms, and soon large cherry orchards spanned the community. Today, only a few of these original cherry orchards survive, and all are on private property.
As the railroad reached Cherrydale and its inexpensive, reliable form of transportation allowed commuters to live in the country and work in the city, the cherry orchards became subdivisions. Many of the homes here were built during this time, between 1900 and 1930. Interestingly, Cherrydale retained its rural character, with cows pastured behind the fire station and many residents keeping chicken coops until the late 1950s. A few homes are still owned by the original residents or their descendants.
Today, Cherrydale offers a very diverse mix of residential housing options. There are some small frame homes built just after the Civil War, some two-story farm houses, a number of the sought-after Sears Roebuck mail order homes from the 1920s, bungalows from the 1930s and fill-in homes in neo-Victorian and colonial styles.
Parks here include Cherry Valley Park and Oak Grove Park, both passive green spaces; Cherrydale Park with a playground and paved trail; and Custis Trail, a four-mile path running under I-66 to downtown Washington DC.
The Cherrydale Branch Library houses over 30,000 works; a book club meets here once each month.
Notable residents of Cherrydale include actor Forrest Tucker and singer Kate Smith.
