Denbigh Neighborhood

Newport News is an independent city located in Virginia’s south-western end, extending southeast from Skiffe’s Creek to the river’s mouth at Newport News Point. Newport News has many distinctive areas within its city limits; one of them is Denbigh, a small unincorporated community in Warwick County.

Denbigh was Warwick’s county seat from 1810 until 1952. After a municipal consolidation in 1958, it became a neighborhood within Newport News. Denbigh was named for Denbigh Plantation, built by Colonel Samuel Mathews, the father of a royal governor of the Virginia Colony.

The elder Samuel Mathews was the first of the Mathews family to emigrate from England, arriving at Jamestown by 1618. He eventually became one of the most prominent men in the colony; his plantation, Matthews Manor, was located on the north side of the James River at Blunt Point, the confluence of the Warwick and the James rivers. The house was later known as Denbigh Plantation.

Frances Grevill, born in 1590, was one of four women who arrived at Jamestown from England in 1620; twice widowed, but with considerable legacies, she married Samuel Mathews.

Their son, the younger Samuel Mathews, was a member of the House of Burgesses, the Governor’s Council, and was Royal Governor of Virginia from 1656 to 1660. He was born at his father’s plantation, which today is within the city limits of Newport News.

The colonial port was located at Deep Creek and the Warwick River on 50 acres of Samuel Mathews’ land. In 1790, Warwick County recorded 1,690 persons in the Federal Census, making it the third smallest county, by population, in Virginia. After the American Revolution Warwick Towne was abandoned, and the county seat was moved to the area of Denbigh Plantation. The former town of Denbigh is now considered a neighborhood area of Newport News, and the preserved 1810 Warwick County Courthouse at Denbigh is now a museum.

The Denbigh neighborhood is in the north side of the city. Denbigh Boulevard, which for much of its length carries State Route 173, is a north-south road that connects the two main east-west arterial roads running through the city, US Route 60 and State Route 143. Denbigh’s commercial area is located along this road. Denbigh High School, part of the Newport News Public School system, is located on Denbigh Boulevard.
