Riverside Neighborhood

Riverside is a neighborhood in Lynchburg, Virginia and lies in the 24503 ZIP code. As the name implies, this neighborhood is close to the James River. This is a heavily wooded residential neighborhood that combines the very new with the more mature. Overall the roads are narrow and winding, and the area is scenic. The newer area has sidewalks, and the older area has trails.

One of the oldest parks in the city of Lynchburg is Riverside Park. It has over forty acres of both active and passive entertainment opportunities. It is a combination of rolling hills and trees allowing for sports use of some areas and simple bucolic pleasure in others. There are basketball and tennis courts as well as a children playground. For serious hikers there are trails that offer scenic views of the James River as well as climbing challenges. The city’s first “sprayground” is located in Riverside Park. One of the most popular destinations within the park is the outdoor transportation museum.

Old City Cemetery is the oldest continuously operated cemetery in Virginia and also the home to several museums. It has the Station House Museum, the Hearse and Caretakers’ Museum, the Pest House Medical Museum, and the Mourning Museum. It also has the Chapel and Columbarium. Many famous and infamous local people are buried in this cemetery.

For over 200 years the Lynchburg Community market has been a part of this city. Located in the heart of downtown, it is managed by the Park and Recreation Department. The market offers local produce in season along with crafts and food at all times of the year. It is the place to come for a taste of the real Lynchburg.
