Houses for Rent in Prince William County, VA
Prince William County, Virginia
Between 1607 and 1609, Captain John Smith set out to explore the Chesapeake Bay region. Nearly 400 years ago, he wrote about the beauty of the region he was exploring, and that beauty still holds true today. Part of that area is present-day Prince William County, Virginia.
Prince William County is deeply rooted in history. Since Captain John Smith made his voyage up the Potomac River to the first battle of the Civil War, this county has been witness to much of the nation’s history. Today, it is known for being the location of the US Marine Corps base Quantico and for its proximity to Washington DC.
The beauty and historic sites the area is famous for is complemented by the area’s strong economy – Prince William County has a strong job market, with its 2011 unemployment rate at 5 percent while the national unemployment rate was 8.5 percent. George Mason University and the University of Northern Virginia, both located in the county, provide a steady job force.
The independent city of Manassas serves as the county seat. The First Battle of Bull Run – the first major Civil War battle – was fought here in 1861. The Second Battle of Bull Run was fought in 1862. After the war, the city began to grow. It was incorporated in 1873 and became the county seat of Prince William County in 1892. Charming and historic Old Town Manassas is the area hub, with pedestrian-friendly streets, elegant architecture, and the Historic Manassas Train Depot. The area features community events, festivals, and a year-round farmers market in addition to art galleries, antique stores, and one-of-a-kind boutiques. Sidewalk cafes, tea rooms, and a wide variety of restaurants can also be found in Old Town.
Other destinations include the Hylton Performing Arts Center, Manassas National Battlefield Park, the National Museum of the Marine Corps, the Prince William County Civil War Heritage Trail, and the Center for the Arts at the Candy Factory.
Towns in Prince William County include Dumfries, Occoquan, Quantico, and Haymarket. Other communities include Antioch, Bristow, Independent Hill, Montclair, Bull Run, Cherry Hill, and Yorkshire.
