Byrd Park Neighborhood
The Byrd Park neighborhood, located in the area referred to as the Central neighborhoods of Richmond, Virginia, takes its name from its park, also named Byrd Park. The heart of the neighborhood is located north and east of the park and its three lakes; Boat, Swan and Shields.
Homes in Byrd Park are a mix of architectural styles, including 1920-era row houses built in the 1920s, two-story frame bungalows, brick Colonials, Cape Cods, American Four Squares and other classic styles popular in the 1930s and 1940s. Large lakefront Spanish, Georgian and Colonial Revival mansions line Westover Road; small, upscale condos and apartments are found in the Fountain Lake area.
Byrd Park itself is a public park located north of the James River and adjacent to Maymont. The 200-acre park, built in 1928, includes tennis courts, Little League baseball fields, a children’s playground, walking trail, monuments, an amphitheatre, and the aforementioned lakes. Boat Lake has an illuminated fountain at its center.
Built in 1926 as a memorial to those who died in WWI, the park’s Carillon contains 56 bells. It’s played on occasions such as Memorial Day, and the Fourth of July, wedding receptions and parties.
Each year, the Dogwood Dell Amphitheatre features summer concerts and theatrical events. Traditionally, each Fourth of July the amphitheater hosts the Richmond Concert Band, which concludes its concert with the 1812 Overture including cannon-fire, the carillon, and a fireworks display.
Byrd Park hosts a number of festivals including an annual two-day “Arts in the Park” festival, an annual “Summer Festival of Arts” and the “It Starts in the Park Festival” on the second Saturday of June, designed to encourage healthy summer fun.
A small, neighborhood retail section and a retirement home converted from a 1922 public school are located along Idlewood Avenue in the northern part of the neighborhood.
Byrd Park is bounded on the south by Byrd Park and Maymont Park, on the north by the Downtown Expressway, on the west by the park and on the east by Meadow Street.
