Richmond at a Glance
Oregon Hill Neighborhood
Oregon Hill is a working-class neighborhood located on the west side of Richmond, Virginia, loosely bounded by West Cary, Belvidere, Oregon Hill Park, South Cherry and South Linden Streets. The Oregon Hill neighborhood overlooks the James River and Belle Isle, and provides access to Hollywood Cemetery.
Following the Civil War, the Reconstruction period was accompanied by industrial expansion. Workers from the Tredegar Iron Works and the Albemarle Paper Company moved here to Oregon Hill to be close to their employment. The neighborhood’s name derives from its far-west location; it was said employees moving there might as well be moving westward to Oregon.
Oregon Hill is very close to Virginia Commonwealth University, and its generally lower rent makes the neighborhood a popular place for students to live, also.
However, there has been much development throughout Oregon Hill in the form of infill projects on previously vacant lots. A townhouse complex called “The Overlook” was built on the blocks overlooking the James River in 2007.
Up until the 1990s, original homes occupied the land in this area. Many were demolished and the land stood vacant after 1997, during which time it was used as a riverside park overlooking the James. Some original homes still overlook the river to the west of this area.
