Richmond at a Glance
The Museum District Neighborhood
The Museum District, a neighborhood in Richmond, Virginia, spans 249 acres and runs south from West Broad Street to Cary Street and east from North Thompson Street to both sides of the Boulevard.
The neighborhood has been known variously as Benedictine, West of the Boulevard and the Upper Fan before being renamed a decade ago. Because the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Virginia Historical Society are the neighborhood’s most significant occupants, the new name identified the area geographically to visitors.
The Museum District, despite its posh new name, hosted only a few farmhouses 100 years ago. Said one realtor, “it was like a village in the middle of nowhere.” But as the city’s streetcar system expanded, “streetcar suburbs” – the name given to neighborhoods built for commuters at the streetcar terminus – began to pop up beyond the Boulevard, and the Museum District began to take shape.
Most of the district’s houses were built between 1911 and 1930. They offer a wide range of architectural styles, including Colonial Revivals, Tudor Revivals, Italianate, Gothic Revivals, Greek Revivals and British Arts and Crafts or “Cotswold Cottage” style homes with steeply pitched roofs and half-timbering. Plaques showing date of construction adorn many of the buildings, and new blue markers commemorate the color of the district’s original street signs.
The Museum District is home to English Village, one of the first examples of communal ownership in the United States. The Tudor Revival-style development on Grove Avenue operates in the same way a modern condominium does today, with owners possessing their own property as well as an interest in the entire development.
Residents are a diverse mix of corporate gypsies, empty nesters, young families and single hipsters who seek a quiet, friendly neighborhood that is also convenient to Richmond’s most vibrant art, dining and shopping venues. Popular Carytown is just one block south of the Museum District. Only two blocks away is Monument Avenue, the only street in the nation designated a national historic landmark.
The Museum District is only seven minutes by car to Richmond’s downtown, with its Capitol Building designed by Thomas Jefferson, the cobblestone streets of Shockoe Slip and its many restaurants and clubs.
