Garden City Neighborhood

The Garden City neighborhood of Roanoke, Virginia has been untouched by time. Located in the southeast corner of the city, it sits in a valley surrounded by hills and unaffected by urban sprawl. Garden City’s boundaries are defined by the natural topography. The northern boundary is Mill Mountain and the neighboring communities of Morningside and Riverdale. Yellow Mountain Road and Blue Ridge Parkway make up the western border. The Roanoke County line marks the border to the south and east.

While it appears that this Roanoke neighbor is isolated, it is only a 10 mile drive to the Roanoke Regional Airport. Downtown Roanoke has many cultural opportunities and major shopping areas that are a short drive away.

Garden City is a suburban community. Many of the residents have lived in the area for decades. The churches provide activities for families and individuals. The Garden City Community Center has an eLibrary with computers and classes. The baseball field at the Garden City Park is lit and Roanoke prides itself on the safety of pedestrians and bike riders on the public streets.

Industry is light in this neighborhood. The largest industry is the Rockydale Quarries that sits on the southern edge of the area.

There is abundant recreation on Mill Mountain, with trails for hiking and the Discovery Center. It is also home to an 85’ giant star that has been lighting the city since 1949, giving Roanoke the nickname of the “Star City of the South.” Next to the star is the Mill Mountain Zoo.

The Garden City neighborhood of Roanoke is a great place for people looking for a community that is laidback and yet still within reach of all the amenities that a big city has to offer.
