South Roanoke Neighborhood

Nestled against the beauty of Mill and Yellow Mountains, South Roanoke has long been a neighborhood desired by families looking to live in a modern city but one that retains a small-town feeling. Pedestrian sidewalks and tree-lined streets highlight an area also well known for the well-manicured landscapes of its homes. The community retains ties to its historic past while managing to incorporate parts of modern society.

Two-story homes dot the landscape of the neighborhood on its northern end and invoke the nostalgia of suburban living at its finest. On the southern end of South Roanoke, there is the sense of old and new melding together in perfect harmony. The proximity of Roanoke Memorial Hospital has spawned numerous new medical offices nearby. However, the old-town feel is represented by the Crystal Spring Village Center, which brings together new establishments and several businesses that have been around for two or three generations.

Fern Park and River’s Edge Sports Complex are perfectly situated for recreational activities and sporting events, while South Roanoke Park allows enthusiasts the opportunity to fish from the nearby Roanoke River.

Numerous trails are available to residents at nearby Mill Mountain and ridges surrounding it. The trails allow scenic, elevated views of the surrounding nature and of downtown Roanoke. Visitors will enjoy Mill Mountain Zoo, with numerous species of animals, along with Mill Mountain Park, which provides picnic and open space for all. The Mill Mountain Star, the world’s largest freestanding illuminated man-made star, is also a popular attraction for visitors.

Residents enjoy small-town living with just the right mix of innovation in South Roanoke.
