Located on Puget Sound in Washington State, and covering 2,134 square miles, King County is nearly twice as large as the average county in the United States.
According to the 2010 census King County enjoys a population of almost two million residents. That makes this county the most populous in the state. King County includes the cities of Redmond, Bellevue, Renton, Auburn and of course Seattle, which is the county seat and the largest city in the state.
The large King County Parks System encompasses 25,000 acres, includes 180 public parks and 175 miles of trails. King County ranks among the 100 highest-income counties in the United States, with a median income for a household reported to be $53,157 and the median income for a family $66,035. Only a little more than five percent of families and 8.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
However, the county is currently feeling the threat of lost revenue as Boeing, whose 737 airplane is assembled in King County, announced its new design. Called the 737 MAX, the new airplane features new fuel-saving engines.
Mindful of Boeing’s decisions to move its headquarters to Chicago and to build a 787 factory in South Carolina, local business and government leaders recently formed the King County Aerospace Alliance to strengthen the local aerospace industry, position King County as the premier location to build the new 737 MAX and, they hope, keep revenue and jobs in King County. Boeing is expected to announce where it will assemble the plane sometime in 2011.
Some of the more famous people from Seattle include Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, Jimi Hendrix, and Ernestine Anderson.
