Bryn Mawr-Skyway Neighborhood
The Bryn Mawr-Skyway neighborhood in Seattle is located in the southernmost part of Seattle near the border of Renton, Washington. The area bounds Lake Washington, with views from some of the higher elevations. Mostly a residential, single-family neighborhood, the area was first developed in the 1950s when soldiers returned from World War II looking for housing. Sometimes called Skyway-Byrn Mawr, the area encompasses a little over three square miles.
Commuters utilize Interstate 5 to head to jobs downtown, or travel along Lake Washington Boulevard for a more scenic route. Lake Washington Boulevard runs the length of the neighborhood and provides access to a number of parks, including Seward Park with bike trails and a swimming beach. Skyway Park also features a beach, swimming area, picnic spots with barbeque pits, baseball fields, and walks along the creek and wetlands.
The Skyway is fifteen minutes from downtown Seattle with its many infamous attractions, including the Space Needle, Experience Music Project, Science Fiction Museum, Pike’s Place Market, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Pioneer Square shopping district. Buses run directly through the neighborhood, making a jaunt to downtown painless and convenient.
Bryn Mawr-Skyway is close to the Renton Municipal Airport, a small commuter airport now known as the Clayton Scott Field, so named after a pioneer in aviation history. The neighborhood is also close to Boeing Field and the Renton Boeing headquarters, so many employees of the aviation industry reside here. Including the surrounding neighborhoods of Earlington, Hilltop and Lakeridge, the area is sometimes called West Hill. The Westhill Community Council offers classes and activities, many centered in the VFW Hall or the Fire Station.
