Northgate Neighborhood

Northgate lies in northern Seattle, just north of 130th Street NE. The neighborhood’s borders reach to Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. The main street running through the neighborhood is Northgate Way NE, which passes Northgate Mall. Lake City Way also passes through Northgate, taking travelers to Bothell and Kirkland. With easy access to both Interstate 5 and Highway 99, Northgate Mall, the first American covered mall, is popular among both residents and commuters alike.

The neighborhood surrounding the mall is filled with mostly single-family homes built after 1950, as the area was sparsely populated before that time. Larger apartment buildings and condominiums run along the main arterials.

A large parking lot provides access to commuters next to the Northgate mall on 1st Avenue NE. The parking lot provides over 400 parking spaces, with 50 reserved for carpoolers. The Northgate Transit Center provides 12 bike lockers and access to over 17 bus routes that span the greater Seattle area and its suburbs.

The Northgate Community Center is located a few blocks from the mall, offering its neighbors many services and classes. The Northgate Library is also located nearby on 5th Avenue NE. The library features Baby Story Time and homework help after school. Nearby, Matthews Beach Park offers beach access to Lake Washington for boaters, swimmers, and picnickers. Lifeguards staff the beaches in summer, and the 20-mile Burke-Gilman Trail passes through this park on its way to the suburbs.
