West Woodland Neighborhood

West Woodland is a neighborhood in Seattle, Washington, that is part of the Ballard area. Located north of Leary Way, and south of 65th Street, the area spans 3rd Avenue NW to 26th Avenue, NW. In the center of the neighborhood, West Woodland Park provides an outdoor area with rocks and logs for children to climb on. A garden with covered canopy keeps visitors out of the rain. There are also swings and basketball hoops.

The park adjoins Woodland Park Zoo, with its renowned African safari exhibit, elephant exhibit and petting zoo. Proximity to the Fremont Cut allows visitors to enjoy the Hiram Chittenden Locks and Salmon Ladder for picnics, and salmon and boat viewing.

One of Seattle’s oldest neighborhoods, Ballard was originally settled by fishermen from Denmark and Finland. Students attend West Woodland Elementary, and then go on to Whitman Middle School and Ballard High School. Salmon Bay School is also located here. Buses carry commuters downtown and to the University District. Bikes are a popular way of travel here, with many trails providing access east and west.

The Burke Gilman Trail begins in Ballard and travels along the Fremont Cut, past the University of Washington, then out to Seattle’s suburbs. A few shops and restaurants along Leary Way lure shoppers, but the main shopping area for residents is Market Street N.W to the north. Bars and clubs in the Fremont neighborhood are just a jump away. The Ballard Bridge is a common thoroughfare to travel to downtown via the Interbay neighborhood.
