Spokane County, Washington

Located in northeastern Washington, Spokane County is a beautiful, natural area wrapped around its largest city and county seat, Spokane. The county was formed in 1858 and has been the ideal location for outdoor enthusiasts ever since. The Spokane River runs through the city and the Spokane River Centennial Trail runs along side it – a 37 mile, paved trail used for bicycling, jogging, and walking. The highest point in Spokane is the summit of Mount Spokane, one of the tallest mountains in the Inland Northwest. Surrounding the mountain is one of Washington’s largest state parks, Spokane State Park, which contains 13,919 acres. The mountain is a hotspot for skiing and snowboarding.

Settled in 1871, Spokane’s colorful history began in the early 1800s, when gold and silver were discovered. Trapping was also a lucrative business, and a fur trading post, the Spokane House, was established on a peninsula between the Spokane and Little Spokane Rivers. In the mid-1800s, American settlers arrived via the Oregon Trail, and the area began to grow and evolve into the modern city it is today.

Downtown Spokane features pedestrian bridges over the river, making the area very pedestrian-friendly and enjoyable. The Spokane Center, which includes the INB Performing Arts Center, and the Spokane Arena are located downtown. Gonzaga University, Eastern Washington University, and Washington State University are all located downtown. Downtown also includes the Fox Theater, historic hotels such as Davenport and Montvale, shops and restaurants, and several condominiums and apartment buildings to choose from.

Other communities in Spokane County include Waverly, Rockford, Spangle, Millwood, Cheney, Deer Park, Liberty Lake, Fairfield, Amber, Mica, Valleyford, Green Bluff, and Colbert.
