Dane County, Wisconsin

A lush, green landscape adorned with crystal clear lakes welcome visitors to Dane County, Wisconsin. Located in the southern part of the state halfway between Milwaukee and the Iowa border, Dane County contains 30 recreational areas for all types of outdoor activities, including picnicking, camping, hiking, boating, and mountain biking. Dog parks, disc golf courses, horseshoe pits, sports fields, and playgrounds are all readily available, as well. The 1,000-mile-long Ice Age National Scenic Trail is an amazing hiking trail that can be accessed through the Ice Age Junction Area. This is a multi-use area with paved trails for biking and walking and unpaved hiking trails.

Natural beauty blends nicely through the cities and towns of Dane County, which was established in 1836 as a territorial county. The capital of Wisconsin and Dane’s county seat is Madison, the second-largest city in Wisconsin.

Madison contains four large lakes, and downtown Madison is located on an isthmus between Lake Monona and Lake Mendota. The University of Wisconsin-Madison is located in the downtown area. The other two lakes in Madison are Lake Waubesa and Lake Kegonsa. Madison is an extremely well-educated and progressive city with a strong economy with many high-tech and biotech industries. Businesses located in Madison include Covance, Raven Software, Pacific Cycle, American Girl, and Rayovac. Madison’s low unemployment rate and high quality of living consistently keep it on the top of best places to live lists.

Madison is very pedestrian-friendly. Downtown’s State Street is a popular hangout location with cafes, restaurants, and shops. Cars aren’t allowed on the street – only pedestrians, bikes, emergency vehicles, and buses. This is a fun, hip area filled with students. The State Capitol Square is an important downtown hub where the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra performs free concerts and where the Dane County Farmers’ Market is held. Near Capitol Square you’ll find King Street, a trendy, high-end shopping and dining area.

Madison has a strong cyclist presence. Bicycling is huge and generates millions of dollars in tourism. The active lifestyle in general has led Madison to become one of the nation’s healthiest cities (according to Men’s Journal Magazine, 2004). When it is too cold for biking, outdoor enthusiasts enjoy ice skating, ice fishing, cross-country skiing, ice hokey, ice-boating, and snowkiting.

Other cities in Dane County include Sun Prairie, Verona, Monona, Fitchburg, Middleton, and Stoughton. Towns include Bristol, Medina, Montrose, Perry, and Albion. Villages include Dane, Rockdale, Cross Plains, Black Earth, and Mount Horeb.
