It is a beautiful area scattered with lakes: Pewaukee, Okauchee Lake, Summit, and several others provide scenic beauty and outdoor fun, including swimming beaches and boat launches. The county seat, Waukesha, is on the rise as one of the top locations to call home. It has been listed on several “best” lists, including Money magazine’s 100 Best Places to Live. It is a college town, home to Carroll University and the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha. Early pioneers were drawn to Waukesha because of its spring water, which was believed to have healing power. Mary Todd Lincoln spent the summer of 1872 there, mourning the death of her son the year before. And when Richard W. Sears, founder of Sears and Roebuck, retired in 1908, he lived out the rest of his life on a large estate in Waukesha.
