Waukesha County, Wisconsin

Located west of Milwaukee, Waukesha County is in that perfect spot, right between urban and rural. It is a beautiful area scattered with lakes: Pewaukee, Okauchee Lake, Summit, and several others provide scenic beauty and outdoor fun, including swimming beaches and boat launches. Waukesha County also features over 16 miles of cross-country ski trails, picnic areas, campgrounds, and plenty of natural areas for skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking.

The county seat, Waukesha, is on the rise as one of the top locations to call home. It has been listed on several “best” lists, including Money magazine’s 100 Best Places to Live. It is a college town, home to Carroll University and the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha. Early pioneers were drawn to Waukesha because of its spring water, which was believed to have healing power. Mary Todd Lincoln spent the summer of 1872 there, mourning the death of her son the year before. And when Richard W. Sears, founder of Sears and Roebuck, retired in 1908, he lived out the rest of his life on a large estate in Waukesha.

Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin’s largest village, features a waterfall in the center of the community. It is part of the Menomonee River, which flows through much of the county. The historic Village Centre features historic architecture filled with quaint shops, restaurants, an art gallery, and other businesses. This pedestrian-friendly area features red-bricked sidewalks, period lighting, and beautiful Mill Pond Park. From May through November, the Village Centre hosts the Menomonee Falls Farmers Market, which features locally-grown and locally-produced items, including produce, baked goods, specialty items, and arts and crafts.

Waukesha County’s other communities include Vernon, Monterey, Mapleton, Jericho, Goerke’s Corners, Eagleville, Buena Vista, and Colgate.
