Bedford Dwellings is part of a group of five neighborhoods that make up what is known as the Hill District of Pittsburgh. The Hill District is one of Pittsburgh’s oldest neighborhoods and is now being revitalized. Construction is planned for a $9 million dollar branch of the YMCA that will have a rooftop garden. A new grocery store will be completed in the next few years.

Jazz has been a part of the neighborhood since the early 1940s when Ramsey Lewis, Cannonball Atterley and others performed in the community. Several investors have formed a group to restore the historic jazz club, the New Granada Theater, where previous performers were Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. Nearby Duquesne University recently opened a new pharmacy in the community.

The Hills neighborhood was highlighted in a TV Show, Hill Street Blues, which was written by a Carnegie Mellon University student who lived near the community when he went to school in Pittsburgh.

Bedford Dwellings’ residents interested in higher education will find Carnegie Mellon and Duquesne Universities and the University of Pittsburgh close to the neighborhood.

Shopping is a unique experience for Bedford residents, who live within walking distance of Pittsburgh’s Strip District. This historical area was once the center of the wholesale produce industry and is now an active marketplace of street vendors, specialty grocery stores, coffee shops, restaurants, antique, gift and decorating shops. There is even a museum on The Strip which is affiliated with the Smithsonian Institute. The Strip is a delightful mix of ethnicities, including Asian, European, Latin American, Middle Eastern and Caribbean providing the foods and specialties of their heritage.
